This is the oldest square in Benguela. It was an important center of commercial activity, concentrating a large part of the economic interests and social life of the city, due to the influx of caravans from the interior in order to negotiate rubber, wax and ivory. The artillery piece that would have been placed there, in 1846, would have been from the cannon that served to ward off the attacks of the natives, mainly of the Mundombe that continuously attacked the city to plunder. The piece was carefully pointed at Dombe-Grande.
