1. rare bird
Flamingo is an endangered species in the world, this is due to the destruction of its habitat such as wetlands (Mangroves, Marshes, lakes, etc.) as well as to predatory hunting and capture of bird eggs.
2. Only in balance
The bird is known for standing on one leg. This happens because they balance body temperature in this way. As they live in aquatic areas, the habit of keeping just one leg in the water helps them not lose body heat.
3. Filtered food
Flamingos feed through a method called water filtration. Through protrusions on the tongue and rigid structures in the jaws, they are able to pump water, retaining particles and scraping food with their tongue.
4. Mating
Flamingos mate with the same individual for life, which is why they are one of the most monogamous species. Furthermore, both the male and the female participate in the egg incubation period and help with the initial care of the offspring.
5. Pink bird
The flamingo's color is due to its diet rich in carotenes, a substance that, after being absorbed by the body, gives its feathers a reddish color. Crustaceans, which are rich in this type of nutrient, are flamingos' favorite food.
6. Antiquity
Studies carried out with fossils indicate that flamingos have existed for 7 million years.
7. Flamingo daycare
Flamingos, when they are born, stay in a kind of “daycare” until they are around one hundred days old. During this period, the parents are able to see their young and feed them. After this period in the “nursery”, the birds become independent.
8. They are big
The bird is one of the tallest in the fauna, reaching 1 and a half meters. The female is usually smaller than the male.
9. Life Estimation
Flamingos can live up to 40 years, and can remain free (33 years) or in captivity (44 years) for long periods.
10. In a group and always on the move
Flamingos are migratory birds, they live in large colonies and fly around 500 km a day to feed and look for places to build their nests.
