Benguela – Under the banner of prevention and fight against breast cancer, the Semana Rosa Association
Angola and the Grupo Unidos de Ombaka took around 500 women to the streets on Saturday, 26th, in
Benguela.
At issue is the Pink Walk, which, without letting itself be inhibited by the light rain that fell on Saturday morning, brought together women
of various ages and socio-professional backgrounds, including some men fighting breast cancer.
Organized jointly by the Semana Rosa Angola Association and the Unidos de Ombaka Group, as part of the 7th edition of
Pink October 2024 Campaign, the march had testimonies from women, known as warriors, who beat breast cancer
breast.
To ANGOP, at the end of the walk, on the beachfront of Morena beach, the president of the non-governmental organization Semana Rosa Angola
(SRA), Dalila Prata, warned that breast cancer has claimed the lives of several women, which is why she is satisfied with the adherence of the
society.
It is clear that the great participation of both women and men representing civil society in Benguela,
it exceeded all the expectations of the organization, which is grateful for the solidarity shown.
However, he also highlighted as a positive sign the participation of employees from the Attorney General's Office and other
partner public institutions, which, in their opinion, reinforces everyone's awareness of the fight against breast cancer.
“We are very happy for this first initiative outside of Luanda”, he highlighted, noting that it is the seventh year of the Pink Walk
and, by the way, Benguela, the first city to host the event outside the capital, as part of the decentralization of SRA activities.
Regarding the rain, Dalila Prata emphasized that it was like a blessing for all the women who joined the walk, despite
admit that participation would be higher if it didn't rain.
Prevention
Knowing that men can also contract breast cancer, the leader of the SRA highlights the commitment to increasingly take the
information to the street and communities as a powerful weapon for prevention.
“Breast cancer in men is terrible and even more fatal, because they don’t have breast tissue”, he warns, promising that they will continue to
promote awareness campaigns in communities, as there is a lack of information and taboo surrounding the subject.
As an assessment of the work done over the last seven years, Dalila Prata is convinced that today, compared to the beginning of this
long journey, there are now many more people informed, which gives encouragement to SRA members.
Impressive testimony
When giving her testimony in front of a crowd, dressed in pink, citizen Júlia Baptista, 61 years old, celebrates being cured of cancer
from mom 12 years ago, thanks to her early diagnosis.
With undisguised emotion, Júlia Baptista advises prevention as the best way to avoid this disease.
“We’re going to do the screening (…). I am a survivor because my diagnosis was early.
Today, I live 12 years after cancer”, he concluded,
under a shower of applause and tears of emotion breaking out among the audience.
The Semana Rosa Angola Association was born in 2017, with the aim of raising awareness in Angolan society about various
programs linked to health, with priority for cancer patients, and also carry out charitable actions in communities
needy.
With a board made up of ten people, including doctors, founders and members of civil society, SRA supports 50
women and men who have gone through the cancer process and currently has 25 volunteers. JH/CRB
