Benguela

Benguela

Benguela is a city and municipality, capital of the province of Benguela, in western Angola, composed only of the main commune, which is organized into six zones.
According to 2018 population projections, prepared by the National Statistics Institute, it has a population of 623,777 inhabitants and a territorial area of 2,100 km², making it the most populous municipality in the province and the tenth most populous in the nation. It is limited to the north by the municipality of Catumbela, to the east by the municipalities of Bocoio and Caimbambo, to the south by the municipality of Baía Farta and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
The term "Benguela" would be of Umbunda origin, with its original roots in the terms "venga" or "mbenga", from the verb "okuvenga" or "okuvengela" which in Portuguese means "to dirty, muddy or soil it", meaning associated with water from the Catumbela river; it can also mean "dark or opaque", related to the closed forest formerly surrounding Vacas Bay.
There is still a theory that associates the toponym "Mbegela" with the name of a king of the primitive kingdom of Benguela, which existed independently until the eve of the first contacts with the Portuguese, when he became a vassal. In any case, "Benguela" was a Portuguese and strongly conventional name, so that the original terms are strange in contemporary times.
