Praia dos Padres, located in the Caotinha area, is one of the most unique and discreet coastal spaces in the province of Benguela. More than just a stretch of sand, this place brings together scenic value, historical memory and an atmosphere of tranquility that sets it apart from other beaches in the region.
The beach is characterized by a calm environment, with light-colored sand, rocky areas and a sea that varies according to the time of year. During calmer sea conditions, the location becomes particularly inviting for swimming, seaside walks and moments of contemplation.
At the top of the hill adjacent to the beach once stood the so-called Casa dos Padres, a building used by members of the Catholic clergy during the colonial period.
It is important to emphasize that this space did not function as a church or a place for religious celebrations. The house was mainly used as a place of rest and support, serving as a refuge for priests returning from missions in the country’s interior, often after long periods of pastoral work under demanding conditions.
From the house, there was a direct stairway leading down to the beach, allowing reserved access to the sea. This route facilitated moments of rest, moderate leisure and contact with nature, in a serene and secluded environment, away from the pressure of missions and urban life.
It was this regular use of the space that led the local community to designate the area as Praia dos Padres, a name that became established in collective memory and remains to this day.
