Tourists visiting the province of Benguela may soon have to pay tolls when accessing tourist and historical areas, announced the director of the Office of Culture and Tourism, Rosália Tchitale.
Despite being approved a few years ago by the Government, the charging of fees for access to the country's main tourist areas was not implemented due to a lack of regulation by the competent bodies. p>
Speaking to the press, after the inauguration of the Flow Hotel, in Benguela, the head of the Provincial Office of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports raised the possibility of charging tolls at tourist sites, as it is a concern for the sector.
For Rosália Tchitale, we are currently looking at the mechanisms on how to start working towards the eventual implementation of these taxes on tourists and, thus, benefit from tourism.
“When we travel to other countries, we pay tolls, even to go to a beach”, she highlighted.
For her, the remodeled Benguela National Archeology Museum (MNAB), classified as national historical-cultural heritage, with an average of a thousand visitors/month, would be ideal for taxation.
But the public manager insists on the need to study the possibility of charging tolls, given the open tourist sites, such as Morena beach, the main postcard of the city of Benguela.
“Our Morena beach is an open place, so all this needs to be studied otherwise we risk charging on one side and others passing without paying on the other side”, she warned.
In any case, says Rosália Tchitale that the expectation is to start with the process some time from now in more closed locations, in ways to be defined.
Expecting that the population will resist in the first phase, the manager of Culture and Tourism in Benguela is optimistic that, over time, the measure will “come to fruition”.
Tourist movement
At another point in the interview, she acknowledged that the tourist movement is growing rapidly in the province, which annually receives a few thousand tourists, both national and foreign.
In her opinion, the figure could even be higher, if it weren't for the constraints resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, which ended up reducing the movement of tourists.
“You can see that in the province of Benguela we don't have nightclubs, due to the decrease in the number of tourists”, she noted, stressing that the tourist park, little by little, is gaining momentum .
