Benguela - The head of the Provincial Department of Tourism in Benguela, João Calete, announced, this Wednesday, the creation of more profitable municipal tourist routes, with a view to boosting the sector in 2025.

In statements to ANGOP, about the sector's prospects for 2025, the person responsible listed, among the existing tourist routes in the province of Benguela, Dombe Grande, Açude, Catumbela, Caxaramba, Lobito, Bocoio, Balombo and Ganda.

"We initially wanted to create a general itinerary, but we feel that the general one doesn't sell.

So we are creating tourist routes at the level of municipalities", he stressed, explaining that the idea is to promote cultural, historical and religious routes that arouse the interest of visitors.

Regarding cultural tourism, João Calete gave as an example the strong potential of the Dombe Grande commune, in municipality of Baía Farta, with the backdrop of folk dances that date back to our ancestors.

"Tourists don't come to Benguela to stay in large units (...). They want to know the culture of our people, our dances", he observed, highlighting the idea that we need to work more on promoting tourist routes in the municipalities.

According to him, the province of Benguela currently has four to five kizomba dance schools, which receive tourists every day international, among Danes, Swedes and Italians.

Tourist guides Likewise, he said that the Department of Tourism's intention is to train tourist guides by specialty, especially religious and cultural, to help tourists on trips to places of historical interest.

He also highlighted the need to start doing some marketing work outside the province, that is, in embassies and countries that send tourists to Benguela, such as Portugal, South Africa, among others.

"We have to work seriously on publicizing tourist sites in the province of Benguela", he said, highlighting that tourism from business and leisure dominate the region.

Tourism boosts investment João Calete hinted that the idea is to make tourism a lever to attract investment to municipalities, mainly in the interior and, in this way, improve the living conditions of the population.

"When you have a very strong tourist potential, tourists appear and so do the roads", he stressed, commenting that if a If a given location receives more than a thousand tourists, the Government will install health infrastructure and roads. Regarding the costs of tourism in Benguela, João Calete argues that with 100 thousand kwanzas it is possible to go on a tourist tour by one of the aforementioned municipalities.

Just to give you an idea, he added that Benguela currently has the lowest price nationwide, with accommodation in a A four-star hotel costs between 80 thousand kwanzas, maximum, and 50 thousand kwanzas, minimum.

"If you go to a residence, there is a daily rate of 12 thousand kwanzas and this price includes breakfast", he concluded.

Privileged tourist destination The second tourist destination in Angola, after Luanda, the province of Benguela has more than 32 hotels, one hundred guesthouses and guesthouses, in addition to many inns and complementary accommodation enterprises, known as lodges and resorts.

In terms of visits, during this year, the province received approximately thirty thousand tourists, including residents (75 percent) and travelers from other countries, compared to thirteen thousand in 2023.

Contrary to what happened in the past, when Portuguese tourists dominated local tourism, today South Africa is the main source of foreign tourists for the province of Benguela. JH/CRB
