Geographically, the municipality of Bocoio is located northeast of the province of Benguela, 106 kilometers from the capital city, 75 km west of the railway-port city of Lobito and 75 km east of the municipality of Balombo. To the north, it is 109 km from the headquarters of the province of Kwanza-sul, to the south it borders the municipalities of Cubal and Ganda.
Its climate is dry tropical with two seasons, hot with precipitation and cold with cacimbo. The surface area is 5,512 km2 with an estimated population of 163,714 inhabitants.
The municipality of Bocoio, formerly “Vila Sousa Lara”, with its headquarters Tchissandji, founded in 1827 by Mr. Fernando, the first head of the administrative post, has five municipalities: Monte-Belo (Utue Wombua) , founded on December 15, 1955, is 31 km from the headquarters. Chila (founded on May 20, 1925) is 68 km from the headquarters, Cubal-do-Lumbo was founded on June 15, 1963, while the commune of Passe was founded on June 15, 1964.
