In the 1950s, he began working on sea turtle conservation in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, and became one of the most important researchers in the field.
Through his studies and work, he was responsible for much of what is known about the biology and life cycle of these animals.

There is another date for turtles, May 23, celebrated as World Turtle Day. This day has been promoted annually since 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue organization with the aim of drawing attention to and increasing knowledge and respect for turtles and tortoises, and encouraging human action to help them survive and thrive.

The creation of these two dates aims to draw attention to the threats that sea turtles have been facing: pollution, hunting, accidental fishing, destruction of nests, climate change, degradation of their habitats.

The Kitabanga Project has been working on the conservation of sea turtles in the country since 2003 and currently covers 105 km of beach in the regions of Kissembo, Longa, Cuio and Manono.
It develops awareness-raising actions among the population about the danger of extinction of these species and about their importance for the health of the environment in a fun and creative way.
Of the seven species existing in the world, three spawn on Angolan beaches and two occur in our waters.

Ocean waters cover 71% of the Earth's surface and play an extremely important role in regulating life on the planet.
The oceans are a source of food, employment and income for millions of people around the world. Activities related to fishing, maritime transport and coastal tourism constitute important economic pillars for many countries, including Angola, whose extensive coastline represents enormous potential for sustainable development.

However, plastic pollution, overfishing, climate change and the destruction of natural habitats put marine life at risk. Every year, tons of waste end up in the sea, affecting species such as turtles, birds and marine mammals. Rising water temperatures and ocean acidification also have serious consequences for ecosystems and for the communities that depend on them.
Protecting the oceans is not a task exclusive to environmental authorities. Small individual actions can make a difference, such as reducing the consumption of single-use plastics, participating in beach clean-up campaigns, choosing products from sustainable sources and promoting environmental education among younger generations.
Interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere influence the global climate. The oceans provide most of the oxygen we breathe, absorb carbon dioxide emissions and are economically important for countries that rely on tourism, fishing and other marine resources.

This date serves as an opportunity to raise global awareness about the current challenges faced by the international community in relation to the oceans.
Commemorating this date is important because the oceans are affected by criminal activities such as illegal drug trafficking, illegal fishing, unreported fishing, predatory fishing practices, the invasion of marine species and marine pollution.

On June 5, 1972, Sweden began in Sweden, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which was the first conference to be exclusively dedicated to the environment.

In the 1970s, the world faced increasingly evident problems related to air, water and soil pollution, uncontrolled urban growth, the degradation of natural resources and the impacts of accelerated industrialisation.
On 5 June 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began in Stockholm, Sweden, becoming the first conference to be exclusively dedicated to the environment.

This date came to be celebrated as World Environment Day.
The conference brought environmental debate into the international arena and produced the Declaration on the Human Environment, whose principles constituted the first non-binding international legislation on environmental matters.
It was also during this conference that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established.

These factors further encouraged the adoption of environmental legislation at the national level, as well as the development and adoption of a series of international environmental treaties.

Furthermore, the opening date of the conference, 5 June, was later chosen by the United Nations to celebrate World Environment Day, which is commemorated annually around the world. This celebration seeks to raise awareness among governments, businesses and citizens about the importance of preserving ecosystems, biodiversity and natural resources for present and future generations. On this date, people are encouraged to reflect on ways of acting at the local level so that more sustainable approaches to development can be implemented globally.

These approaches should make it possible to improve environmental quality and, consequently, the quality of life of present and future generations.
In Angola, activities focused on environmental education and awareness are organised on this date to promote the sharing of information about the benefits of adopting sustainable lifestyles.

In 1970 thousands of Americans declared April 22 as the World Day of Planet Earth.

The idea was to draw people's attention to the extreme dependence between human beings and the ecological balance of the planet and to the serious pressures that human activities are exerting on this same balance.

The Earth emerged approximately 4.6 billion years ago and since then the planet has undergone changes to make the emergence of life possible.
However, it was also these changes that led to the evolution of some species and the disappearance of others.
More recently, human activities have accelerated the natural changes on Earth and modified the climate and the characteristics of the soil, water and other components important to our survival.

The Earth is our common home.
There is no other planet within our reach that has the necessary conditions for us to live and prosper there.
It is therefore important to highlight that the preservation of environmental balance and the sustainable use of the planet's resources are fundamental factors for us to continue to satisfy our needs and those of future generations through sustainable development.

This approach, known as drastic pruning or weaning, not only impairs the natural development of trees but also reduces their ability to provide shadow, increasing urban heat and reducing the well-being of the population.

The risks of excessive pruning
When a tree is pruned radically, it loses its natural structure, becoming more vulnerable to disease and pests. In addition, the lack of foliage decreases photosynthesis, weakening the tree and delaying its growth. Instead of creating safer trees, this practice can lead to the emergence of fragile and poorly fixed branches that depart more easily during strong winds or rain.

The need to control the height of some species
Some trees, such as certain types of flamboyant or eucalyptus, grow too high, increasing the risk of branches. In these cases, pruning should be done strategically, removing only the highest branches or those with risk without compromising the entire World Cup. Por isso, o desenvolvimento de Angola ainda irá requerer a utilização de muitos recursos naturais e biológicos, consequentemente danificando o ambiente. Sem contar que ainda existem outras indústrias que vão e estão a ser desenvolvidas e que irão acrescentar nos níveis de poluição nacional também.
