Geography

Benguela is located in the west of Angola, being the capital and main municipality of the province of Benguela.

Its territorial area is 2,100 km², with a population of 2,135,094 inhabitants, according to data revealed by the Provincial Government Consultative Council under the 2014 Census in Angola.

The municipality's vegetation is predominantly composed of staggered plateaus, which are mostly cut by valleys and rivers. The region's dry valleys and rivers accumulate water in the rainy season, as do the monolithic hills located to the north of the municipality and found in most of the province's territory.

The Benguela territory also has several water courses, which, in turn, are influenced by the four hydrographic basins found in the province, such as the Cubal, Handa, Catumbela and Coporolo basins.

There are also steppe formations found in the municipality's vegetation, as well as formations of open forests and wooded savannas.
