In December 2009 the Ombaka National Stadium was opened with a capacity of 35,000 seats, where some games of the 2010 African Nations Cup were played.

Since then it is the home of Estrela Clube Primeiro de Maio, a club founded in 1981 that won the Cup from Angola in 1982, 1983, 2007, and who became national champion in 1983 and 1985.

He competes in the Angolan national championship, Girabola. In 2012, another Benguela club managed to climb to Girabola, the Clube Nacional de Benguela. Founded in 1920, it won the then unofficial Angola Cup in 1980, and is based at the 5,000-seat Atlético São Filipe stadium.

In 1972 the Autódromo de Benguela was inaugurated, which housed several events of the International Season of Angola in 1973 and 1974, among others. With very rare use since 1976, the circuit has declined since the 2000s. Benguela is the slowest touch in regional Capoeira.
