Chongoroi was officially founded in 1914 by the Portuguese and only 62 years later, on 1 September 1972, it gained the status of village. Until then it belonged to Quilengues. But the distance that separated it from Lubango, capital of Huila, was twice more than traveled to the city of red acacias. The logic was made worth, and the municipality was integrated into the Benguelense province, has 6 151 km² and about 82 thousand inhabitants.
